Great-Grandmother Says She Has Some Eyesight Back After Undergoing Stem-Cell Treatment In China

The UK’s Daily Mail (11/2) reports that “a blind British pensioner who flew to China for pioneering treatment has got her eyesight back.” Dorothy Leach, age 76, now “can make out faces, shapes and colours for the first time in more than a year after receiving stem-cell treatment in China.” Leach, who was diagnosed over a year ago with “giant cell arteritis, an inflammatory disease of blood vessels,” underwent “a course of daily wave therapy and acupuncture, with weekly stem cell injections, for 43 days before arriving back home.” She can now see her great-grandson for the very first time.

The UK’s Telegraph (11/1, Gammell) reported that “stem cell fluid taken from umbilical cords of new born babies” were “injected twice into her right eye and six times into her hands over a six week period.” Leach has been told that “it will take six to 12 months to establish how successful the treatment has been.” However, because she has some vision now and is no longer totally blind, she already believes the procedure “was definitely worth it.”
