Photograph Red Eye – What is it?

The back of the eye, known as the retina, lies above a highly vascularized tissue called the Choroid, basically a sheet of blood vessels.  When light enters the eye and is reflected off of the choroid, the image appears red as a result of the blood coursing through the blood vessels of the choroid. The larger the pupils (the black hole towards the front of the eye where light enters), the more chance that the “red reflex” as it is called, will appear in a photograph.
