Everyone’s starting to itch about now – Allergies and your eyes

Spring is upon us; if you live near the north east this is great news after a horrible winter. But allergies bring that dreaded eye phenomenon, itch. What should you do other than scratch your eyes out of your head?

Front line therapies for eye itch include cool compresses, over the counter allergy medications if approved by your physician and over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops. Eye rubbing is discouraged, as it can cause the symptoms of allergy to increase and severe eye rubbing can lead to damage to sensitive eye tissues.

If these methods don’t provide significant relief, visit your eye doctor and ask about prescription eye drop relief such as Patanol, Pataday, Alrex or one of many other eyedrops. These drops, when started early in the allergy season, may lead to improvement beyond what waiting until later in the season may offer.
