Law Would Outlaw Sale Of Contact Lenses Without Rx

The Rapid City Journal (3/13, Meyer) reported that in South Dakota, the “Legislature has sent a bill to the governor outlawing the sale of contact lenses without a prescription.” SB115 “targets the problem of cosmetic, non-corrective contact lenses, according to Dr. Michael Bartlett, president of the South Dakota Board of Examiners in Optometry,” a principal proponent behind the bill. Currently, South Dakotans “are able to go into any store and buy contact lenses that make their green eyes blue without guidance from a doctor, Bartlett said.” The bill is designed to ensure that buyers can purchase proper-fitting contact lenses and will be counseled how to use them safely.our
