FDA begins Lasik eye surgery study

NPR (1/11, Neighmond) reports that although a study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology has found a nearly 95% satisfaction rate with Lasik eye surgery, “there have been an increasing number of complaints from unhappy patients who say they have experienced significant problematic complications.” Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Dr. Malvina Eydelman assured that the agency “has stepped up efforts to ensure that doctors provide patients with information about risks and precautions before having Lasik,” and will also be examining potentially misleading advertisements regarding the surgery. Meanwhile, in conjunction with the National Eye Institute and the US Department of Defense, the FDA will be “beginning a study of thousands of Lasik patients nationwide,” which “is expected to be completed by 2012.”
